NACHRI - VPICU Focus Group Meeting  - March 7, 2003

Steamboat Springs, Colorado

The NACHRI-VPICU Focus Group met for three days (March 5-7) in Steamboat Springs Colorado. The VPICU Performance System software's facilitation of documentation and quality assurance was a central focus of the meeting. The utilization of the database was reviewed and it was noted that there were over 12, 000 validated and verified patients now existing in the database. Data is complete for the first three-quarters of 2002. The fourth quarter will shortly be released, and first quarter of 2003 is pending submission. The database is expected to exceed 30,000 patients within a year and it is anticipated that the accumulation will exceed 25,000 patients per annum over the next few years.

Discussion items included:
1) Severity Illness Scoring and comparison of severity of Illness scoring systems.
2) Practice pattern analysis and comparison.
3) Nursing staffing ratios and PICU outcomes.
4) Code team composition and CPR outcomes.
5) Comparable data for individuals was made available to participating pediatric PICU’s.

An initiative between NACHRI the VPICU and JCAHO was also discussed using the VPICU Performance System as a data collection system for pediatric intensive care units to initiate a process of quality assessment and provide PICU’s with quality assessment tools for their individual practices. Considerable progress was made on a planning document to facilitate this process.

The VPICU Performance System is available upon request via the VPICU website (http://www.picu.org), following registration. There is still time to participate in the large full Data Management Services Membership sponsored by the VPICU.
