Practice Philosophy: Treat patients and families as empathetically as possible while maintaining objectivity. In a teaching program, try to lead the multidisciplinary team through consensus building, as the loss in efficiency is offset by the educational benefit to residents and fellows who are more involved in the decision making, and by nursing, RT, and pharmacy collegiality.

Professional Biosketch: Congential nerd, son of an underwater acoustical physicist. Grew up (always near water) in Connecticut and Bermuda. Attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Albany Medical College's 6-year BS/MD program. Had a PHS NHSC scholarship, paid off by PHS internship and 2 years of rural Pennsylvania general practice, with a voluntary 3rd year tacked on before pediatrics residency, 4th year as chief resident, and 2 years of fellowhip.
Married since 1974, with 3 exhausting children and a lovely artist wife.
Hobbies too numerous to count, with little time for any of them, including: reading, trumpet playing, sailing, flyfishing, woodworking, bicycling, and setting up a Linux network at home.
Computer/Telemedicine/ Informatics Projects: 1) Developed PICU database application for Albany Medical Center in 1986, still in use there. To be phased out and replaced by SpacLabs QUIC system next year.

2) With George Hoffman, 1990-1992 developed A/D carts at MCW/CHW used for real-time signal procesing in various studies including gastric pH variability, heart rate variability, cardiorespiratory interactions on external cardiac assist device. Dr Hoffman is still using the system.

3) Developed and maintain the PICU e-mail discussion list and various e-mail distribution lists (""aliases""). Plan to evolve the forum into one system with a choice for participants of WWW-based or e-mail based discussions.

4) Assist (slowly and in relatively small ways) Barry Markovitz in development and maintenance of the PedsCCM WWW site.

5) Medical director of Information Services at the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. Current main project is selection and implementation of a clinical information system. Anticipate becoming involved in developing Medical Logic Modules for clinical decision support.
